Hypnosis: Fast Track to Relaxation and Mind Reprogramming?

"How does hypnosis work?" Is one of those questions that we will probably never know the real answer to until we know for sure exactly how the brain works.

Hypnosis has long held one of those enigma positions in life whereby it appears both fascinating and dangerous. Mainly because we do not know for sure exactly what happens during hypnosis. Partly because, in the absence of fact, superstition has created a false fear. Fortunately that fear is subsiding as more and more people are willing to be hypnotized or use self hypnosis and discover the benefits of being able to control their own mind.

The general scientific consensus is that the brain has within it the conscious and the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is the storeroom of all knowledge and many outgoing instructions. The conscious mind is the receptor of all information and filtering system. The filtering system is called thinking and is mainly a social filter or a problem solver. This is where decide you will, or will not, do actions in accordance with the social and legal laws of the area or society in which you find yourself. I suppose you could also call it an ego filter. Problem solving is where the conscious mind takes both internal and external knowledge to work out answers to questions.

So what is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is the action performed to enable the subject of the hypnosis to get into a state whereby their conscious mind is very relaxed and operating at an extremely reduced level. A hypnotic trance is where the conscious mind is relaxed to a point where some suggestions can bypass it and go directly to the subconscious where they will be recorded or acted on without a lot of filtering. This will enable them to do a variety of things they would not normally be consciously capable of. If you listen to the video below you will hear just a few of the things that can be achieved through the use of hypnosis.

But how do I get into such a relaxed state?

There are four main ways of doing this and different ones are used depending on circumstances and the hypnotherapist using them. The pendulum fixed focus method that was the butt of many old jokes is not used so much these days. It's use along with the phrase "You are feeling sleepy" is probably why so many people incorrectly associate hypnosis with sleep.

In the video below two methods are used. You hear a short clip of something called the Rapid technique. This is multi-tracked sound that helps to confuse mind and shut it down pretty fast. This also allows the next technique to work quicker too. Progressive relaxation and visualization, or imagery. The soft and drawn out voice tones suggesting you imagine relaxing in your favorite beautiful place. I'm getting more relaxed just writing about it. The video is made up of lots of short clips of sound to give you just a quick sample of various techniques. Watch and listen carefully to hear what I mean. The flowers are there to help you imagine that beautiful place.

Hope you didn't entirely drift off during the video!

Before I go any further let me quash the myth that hypnosis is dangerous. People in a hypnotic trance, or 'under hypnosis' as some like to put it, are not 'in a walking sleep'. Nor are they any danger to themselves or others any more than they would be when not in a trance. They are actually in a state of heightened awareness but with a reduced capability to let thinking get in the way of their actions. When people act in an amusing or silly way on stage in a hypnotists show they do it with their own internal consent. Their social ego has been put to one side and they are enjoying themselves because they are carrying out suggestions that have, in effect, by-passed their filtering system within their conscious mind.

If anything was suggested to them that they really would not want to do, they will not do it. If they went into a really deep trance and they do fall asleep, all that will happen then is that they will wake up naturally. They will no longer be in a trance after waking up.

Taking people into the trance like suggestive state can take anything from a few seconds to half an hour depending on the receptiveness of the person being hypnotized. Once the subject is in the receptive state then it only needs a few minutes of suggestion to start to reprogram the mind. Then only a short time to bring them back out of the state. The suggestions are just that - suggestions. With mind retraining each person has their own goal in mind. Therefore, suggestions rather than commands are used

Although the suggestion may have gone in once or twice, until these suggestions are the dominant thoughts or memories, whether the memories be true or just suggestions that appear true, then they will not replace the original information in the store of the subconscious. This is why the best way to use self hypnosis mp3's or CD's is on a regular basis. Every day for at least a month is best and then occasionally each month to keep the thoughts uppermost in the memory. If you use them just before bedtime then it will not matter if you fall asleep during the session. You will still get the information in even if you are consciously asleep. The subconscious carries on working throughout your sleeping periods.

You may have heard of something called Neuro Linguistic Programming. This is just a way of putting suggestions to the subject in such a way that the subject accepts them as being more logical or understandable and therefore accepted more easily and quickly. Many old school hypnotists say they were using NLP before it had a separate name. As some techniques are very similar that may be true. What the use of NLP does is to reinforce the suggestions that are made during the hypnosis sessions. This helps to get the programming in quicker and to sustain the programming longer.

If you want the full and useable version of the hypnosis session the video clips were taken from, it is available to download for just the cost of your email address if you follow the instructions at the end of the video or just click here. Then, using your own mp3 player, you will be able to sample in full the relaxation that the sample session can bring you. Nearly everyone appreciates the relaxation that hypnosis brings even if no other suggestions are used during the session. Try it and see for yourself.
